The Computer Society of South Africa (CSSA) and Computer Mall have joined forces to initiate a combined Computer Personality of the Year Award. CSSA vice-president Peter Davies says the society has already run its prestigious Computer Personality award for more than two decades.
"We have elected, in the future, to give one award annually in conjunction with Computer Mail to increase the honour associated with the award," he says.
The CSSA will call for nominations for the award over the next few weeks. Nominations can be made for any society member and nominees do not have to be registered with the CSSA. Nominations should include a concise motivation detailing the nominee's achievements in the South African information techonolgy (IT) industry.
We are looking for an individual who has benefited the local IT industry through his or her achievements," Davies says. "The nominee can be active in any sector of the industry, including academic, entrepreneurial, technical, and innovation. Aspects such as job creation, technological awareness, industry development, export potential and pushing forward the extent of knowledge in the computer field are important."
All nominations will be considered by the past presidents of the CSSA under the chairmanship of Colin Palmer, the immediate past president. The winner will be chosen from a short list and announced at the presidential banquet on October 22 at Johannesburg Country Club.
The 1991 Computer Personality of the Year Award was won by Nic Frangos, chairman of Unidata. Winners in the previous years are SPL's Lewis Folb, Etienne Theart of the Commission for Administration and Infoplan's J J van Rensburg
