Computing SA - Frangos is CSSA Man of the year (02.09.1991)

Frangos is CSSA Man of the Year

Nic Frangos, chairman and CE of Datakor, has been named the Computer Society of SA's 1991 Computer Personality of the year.

The award was presented to him by SPL MD Lewis Folb, winner of the last year's award.

Speaking at the function last week, Frangos said: It is not possible to separate the reward for individual achievement from the team effort, and I receive the award both for me and the people in the group.

“The importance of the award is that it is an industry recognition that Datakor has succeeded in its goal of spending the most time and effort on the people side of the business, to create an environment where people can grow and flourish.”

Commenting on the computer industry's role in a new SA, Frangos said: “The local industry has a very significant role to play. At the end of the day we are facing a huge unemployment problem, compounded by the misconception that the advance of computers is at the expense of labour.

“We cannot afford to fall behind the rest of the world and will have to pool our efforts in creating a more knowledgable future SA by using all available computer technology to clear this misconception, educating the masses to the effect that computers in essence only change the nature of our jobs.

“Computer technology must also be applied to change the way people think, instilling in them a much more productive frame of mind.

“Lastly, neither the computer industry nor the electronics industry is held in high regard by investors, and to change this perception, we, the industry, will have to cultivate and promote sound management skills and means,” Frangos said.
